Info
The Vinya dels Taus vineyard formed the basis for Enric Soler’s project. The old vines required a laborious recultivation. All other wines were grown as clones from the genetic material of this plot. The plot was planted with Xarel-lo in 1945, the legendary vintage in the wine world. Sabanell in Alt Penedes is pristine, benefiting from its proximity to the Mediterranean Sea but also from the cool elements from the hinterland mountains. The spectacular Montserrat mountain range forms a barrier to the rear, providing downdrafts and cold nights. Only 0.65 hectares are planted here and form the basis for this magnificent wine. The wines were given the necessary rest and time to stabilize. No clarification or filtration takes place. The resulting complexity is unique. The 2021 vintage was characterized by the following features: The beginning of the year was dry and cold. January also brought good amounts of precipitation and snowfall. February followed, unusually warm with temperatures around 18°C and abundant fog. These early, warm temperatures resulted in the first visible buds as early as March. March and April became quieter. Lower temperatures and little precipitation helped to delay bud break. It was not until June and July that warm temperatures and dry conditions prevailed. The vitality of the vineyards was once again in demand, and growth was slow. The first signs of drought appeared at the end of July. Fortunately, the long-awaited rainfall followed at the end of July. The cold night temperatures are essential here – as was the case in this vintage. The heat wave did not strike until mid-August. A period of rain began at the end of August. The interplay of dry and humid, sunny and shady conditions slowed the ripening process again, so that good conditions prevailed for the harvest.
Colour
Bright, luminous straw yellow with golden hues and light green reflections
Nose
The nose is seductive and intense. The fruit is ripe and characterized primarily by yellow stone fruit. Apricot takes the lead. Mirabelle plum and peach play supporting roles. Orange joins in with the same colour. Fruit flesh and zest at the same time. Tart and fruity. It conveys freshness despite the loud fruit and sets striking accents with yeast and salt. Traces of aging in clearly used barriques are noticeable. Juniper gives it a profound spiciness, while sage maintains the ethereal freshness.
Palate
It starts explosively on the palate. Juicy and silky at the same time. The fruit is intense and full-bodied. Only a slight creaminess surrounds it. Fine tannins envelop it at the same time, creating a powerful moment on the palate. The spice of juniper and sage is again clearly recognizable. In the aftertaste, the fruit becomes more exotic, drifting toward passion fruit. Bitters are also essential in the aftertaste, forming a clear backbone.
