Directly opposite the family home on the other bank of the Moselle is the largest portion of the Busch family’s vineyards in the Marienburg vineyard. The former division into individual vineyards fell victim to wine legislation in the 1970s. To emphasize the specific differences within the Marienburg vineyard, Clemens Busch vinifies the plots separately and bottles the wines under the former parcel names, such as Fahrlay or Flakenlay. This allows the various slate soils (blue, gray, and red slate) and the special microclimates to clearly express themselves in the wine. The wines, which are harvested very late, are characterized by enormous richness and power, as well as mineral substance.

An impressive vineyard – an impressive wine. The ancient vines of this ancient terraced vineyard regularly produce a wine of intense minerality, elegance, and depth, which only truly reveals its potential after several years of bottle aging. The light gray slate here is interspersed with iron-rich layers and is even less weathered than in the neighboring areas. Rockfalls from the terraces above repeatedly affect this site. However, the risk to humans and plants is gladly accepted for results like these in the bottle.

Nose

The nose can now be attributed to Clemens Busch’s clear and distinctive signature. His fruit is serious and mature. At the same time, it appears very shy and pleasantly unobtrusive. Rather, it radiates and bursts with energy and vitality. Mirabelle plum, quince, and apricot oscillate between yellow and orange. Grapefruit and a hint of orange peel can also be detected. But Clemens Busch and his team create so much more than fruit. Native and wild herbs sprout from every corner. It has a warming effect, yet displays the finesse of a cool, classic year like 2021. But above all, it proudly and sublimely displays its tea-like character, which fluctuates between nettle extract and sencha. Earthy, dark, and deep, yet at the same time ethereally refreshing.

Palate

On the palate, it demonstrates all this and so much more. It presents itself in a concentrated and compact manner. The fruit is loud and full of intensity. 2021 Felsterrasse is an incredibly tightly knit Riesling. Every fiber is at its full strength. A fine phenolic structure forms its backbone. The fruit appears noticeably greener and fresher. The herbal and earthy aromas clearly dominate the flavour profile. The aftertaste also reveals vegetal nuances, strongly reminiscent of artichoke and pea.
