A unique wine from the terraced, steep Enkircher Ellergrub vineyard with ancient, ungrafted vines. The vines are on average over 100 years old. They grow on blue, hard slate with abundant quartzite inclusions. The old vines still produce a yield of just 15 hl/ha. In 2023, only 500 l of Spätlese were produced. 2023 tended to be rather warm and brought plenty of moisture during the harvest. Accordingly, a meticulous and complex selection was required, which then significantly reduced the yield. The small batch was fermented in steel tanks and transferred to a small steel container after the first racking. With 67 g/l of residual sugar, it ranks just above a Kabinett. However, with 8.5 g/l of acidity, it also offers less contrast. The alcohol content is 8.5% vol.

Colour

Silvery shimmering lemon yellow with light reflections and green elements

Nose

An incredibly playful and energetic nose stands before me in the glass. Its fruit is delicate and shy. It builds up slowly. Lemons, especially their zest, grapefruit and bergamot are tart, fresh representatives. A hint of Nashi pear underlines it elegantly and clearly. Intense aromas from the herbal corner come to the fore. Bronze fennel, lemon balm, lemongrass and mint are particularly noteworthy. Behind the herbs, the nuances of honey are barely apparent at this young stage. This will change with maturity. Its origins are clearly recognizable. There is no denying that this Riesling grows on slate. The combination of slate spice, wet stones and intense fruit is unique.

Palate

On the palate, it plays to all the strengths of a classic, young Spätlese wine. Its delicate sweetness dances across the palate. The wine combines elegance and power in a way that only Simone Biles can achieve in gymnastics. Its racy side and the bare slate undertones are clearly evident. The fruit clings to the delicate sweetness, but always remains bright and restrained. Its tart, citrusy components are fundamental. Its acidity builds up powerful pressure on the palate. The salty and bitter components also come across perfectly. It dances along seemingly endlessly, yet lightly, and the finish seems never-ending. At the same time, it inspires you to drink more, which fortunately isn’t too difficult at 8.5% ABV.
