Product description for Vins Nus Tabla Rrasa II, El Quadre Buit PXX 2021
Info
Pedro Ximénez is the third white variety with a significant presence in Priorat. It owes its success, in part, to the efforts of immigrants from the south who arrived in the 1960s, attracted by the mining activities around Bellmunt.
Located in the immediate vicinity of the winery at Clos del Portal, this old vineyard was recultivated. The 45-year-old vines grow on calcareous soil interspersed with pebbles and some slate. Its purist form and slightly oxidative touch make it a huge success. Fermentation takes place in a single 500-liter barrel. It ages under flor yeast for five months, fermenting any sugars. After the flor breaks, it undergoes a gentle oxidative maturation. 372 bottles of this unique wine were produced.
Color
The glass shines with an intense lemon yellow of luminous origin and amber reflections.
Nose
The nose initially presents itself as typical of a Mediterranean Pedro Ximénez: rather linear and restrained, without overt fruit, but with complex herbal aromas. I find its delicate oxidation extremely appealing and balanced. Aromas reminiscent of dried Mediterranean herbs such as oregano, sage, and thyme dominate. These are accompanied by notes of hay, dry grasses, and blossoms, particularly almond, apple, and orange. Fine accents of orange and tangerine zest, freshly chopped almonds, and a subtle, spicy component—consisting of clove, cardamom, and allspice—give the nose additional depth. A hint of white pepper creates an exciting balance of lightness and profundity. As the wine progresses, the herbal aromas emerge not only in dried but also in fresh, ethereal form, lending the bouquet additional dynamism. The fruit remains restrained throughout, appearing only delicately in the background – with hints of persimmon, apricot, and again mandarin orange.
Palate
On the palate, the wine impressively confirms the impressions of the nose. It appears compact and dense, with a firm, almost powerful attack. Here, too, the fruit remains discreet and soon fades into the background. The PXX is built on a linear, chalky, and barren framework that gives it a clear structure and taut texture. The acidity is restrained, the melt barely noticeable, and yet the wine creates remarkable tension and pressure on the palate. It is salty, subtle, and mineral, always with a quiet elegance that can be described as true understatement. Its strength lies in accompanying dishes, not dominating them.
The Mediterranean herbal accents once again become clearly evident in the finish. The minerality remains noticeable, accompanied by a delicate acidity that practically dances across the palate. The impression is rounded off by nutty accents that add warmth and depth to the finish.
