From 60+-year-old vines around the domaine in Apetlon and vinified in 1,000-liter oak vats, Heinz Velich’s 2021 Welschriesling Alte Reben offers a clear, fresh and spicy bouquet of white fruits and almond aromas. The wine is round and pretty intense yet also structured by fine acidity and healthy phenolic grip. The finish is remarkably saline in a delicate way, which makes this a dry classic of the region at the eastern shore of Lake Neusiedel. It is beautifully bitter on the aftertaste, like an artichoke or a Romana salad. Heinz Velich’s answer to Aligoté comes in with 13.5% stated alcohol, but the wine doesn’t taste alcoholic at all. It is full-bodied and quite intense but lifted by its bright acidity and earthed again by its food-friendly phenolic grip and bitterness. Diam cork. Tasted in July 2023.
