Wine Information

The Guigne-Chèvres single-vineyard site is situated on a gently sloping hillside facing northeast. The soils are characterized by red clay on Caillottes, the marly Oxford limestone from the Jura. The vines are almost 40 years old. This wine is aged on the lees for ten months in Stockinger foudres.

Nose

Of the 2021 single-vineyard Sancerres, the Guigne-Chèvres is the most profound and closed, yet at the same time the finest and most elegant. Here, too, one has the expressive green notes so typical of the vintage, but much more stone, salt, iodine, and oyster shell, with a single warming note of white-fleshed stone fruit.

Palate

On the palate, the Guigne-Chèvres offers plenty of power and tension, permeating a powerful body. A hint of sweet stone fruit combines with plenty of elderberry, herbs and lime, apples and green pears. Added to this are salt and a touch of pepper, culinary herbs, and fennel greens. The wine exhibits immense tension and power right up to the long finish, clearly demonstrating the cool 2021 vintage, which is probably rare these days in Sancerre.

The 2021 Guigne-Chevres is an attractive, charming Sancerre that is so easy to like. It has a delightful tenderness remaining light on its feet. Very floral – it’s all elderflowers. Lacy in its texture, almost like a pianist playing a trill very quietly. This is an appealing, quiet and delicate wine. An absolute delight.
