Product description for Terroir al Limit Pedra de Guix 2022

Pedra de Guix combines three indigenous grape varieties – Pedro Ximénez, Macabeo, and Grenache Blanc – from different locations and soils in the Priorat. The 50- to 80-year-old vines grow at altitudes between 400 and 600 meters in clay, river deposits, and slate. After gentle whole-bunch pressing, the wine ages for eight months in cement, with the Pedro Ximénez undergoing targeted oxidative aging.

Nose

The 2022 Pedra de Guix from Terroir al Limit has an ethereal effect, reminiscent of Hildegard von Bingen’s herb box: herbal infusion, dried flowers, and distinctive notes of chamomile tea and yarrow outline its herbal nature, while delicate citrus notes complement it with fruity aspects. Underpinned by nutty notes, the wine is exceedingly complex and calls for a carafe or large glass.

Palate

On the palate, it has a refreshingly creamy texture and a silky feel. The herbal spice of the nose with its aromatically tart character is also reflected on the palate. Flanked by tart phenolics, in its youth it seems a bit like a tincture or balm – aromatically dense and tightly interwoven, more knitted than woven. With a complete absence of striking fruit notes, it shimmers in the glass with radiant old gold, orange, and apricot, supported by a fine extract sweetness reminiscent of licorice and dried fruit with a phenolic framing.

The white 2022 Pedra de Guix is a coupage of old-vine 40% Garnacha Blanca and 30% each Pedro Ximénez and Macabeo that fermented with full clusters for three days and matured in concrete for eight months. It has 13% alcohol with a pH of 3.58 and 4.6 grams of acidity. It has a very reductive personality and was not easy to read. It took a long time in the glass to dissipate the reduction and unfurl aromas of yellow fruit, stone fruit, wet chalk and a stony sensation. It has a chalky texture, clean and tasty flavors, with some austerity. This is the second year when the wines are not in oak foudre anymore, and it’s all in concrete. 4,508 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2023.
