Wine Information

Xérico 2018 is a local wine from Viñaspre in Rioja Alavesa, made from 85 percent Tempranillo and 15 percent Viura, the most important white wine variety in Rioja. The vineyards are between 15 and 50 years old and mostly have limestone soils. The grapes are partly destemmed and partly fermented with the stems. The wine is aged exclusively in concrete.

Nose

2018 was an Atlantic year in Rioja Alavesa, and accordingly, the aroma is dominated by crisp, fresh blueberries and cherries. The wine is pure and clear; there is nothing overripe or opulent about it. This is stimulating and arouses desire.

Palate

The very fresh impression continues seamlessly on the palate. The white Viura, which makes up 15 percent, certainly plays a role here. Winemaker Roberto Oliván’s focus is clearly on freshness and finesse, not power and extract. The wine has a grippy texture, the tannins are fine-grained, and the finish is juicy and stimulating. Xerico is a wonderful drinking wine of great clarity, brisk and almost light despite its 14 percent alcohol content. This is what the new Rioja tastes like.

The 2018 Xérico is a village red from Viñaspre and is a blend of 85% Tempranillo and 15% Viura from four organically farmed, head-pruned vineyards on slopes on limestone marl soils, all the vineyards separated by soil for this wine and red sandstone for Tentenublo. The grapes were partly destemmed and fermented and aged concrete for a long time. The wine takes time; it’s hard and tannic when young and gets polished by time in the bottle. It’s a young wine, fruit-driven, with more red than black fruit, and with a polished palate, with balance and fine tannins. 25,950 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2019.
