Product description for Marco de Bartoli Vigna La Miccia, Marsala Superiore Oro Riserva 2019
Vigna La Miccia is Marco de Bartoli’s modern answer to traditional Marsala: a semi-dry, fresh style that emphasizes the fruit and elegance of the Grillo grape. The wine is not vinified using oxidative methods, but rather ages for five years in constantly full French oak barrels. As was once customary, it is enriched with a proprietary “mistella” of fresh grape must and grappa from the same Grillo grapes. The grapes come from old Grillo vines in the Contrada Samperi, on level, sandy-loamy soils, trained using the Alberello and Guyot systems. After gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts takes place at room temperature in oak barrels. A portion of the fresh must is separately fortified with grappa and later added to the wine. Aging takes place without oxidation for five years in constantly full barrels.
Color
Intense amber.
Nose
The 2019 Vigna La Miccia Marsala Superiore Oro by Marco de Bartoli displays a balanced conglomeration of citrus fruits of various types and preservation levels, roasted nuts, and dark, robust honey such as fir or acacia honey. Dried tangerine peel, orange blossom water, and dehydrated blood orange slices, as in a bar, mingle with dried figs and salty shortcrust pastry, salted hazelnut slivers, cashews, and sublime wood spice. Demanding, stimulating, and complex, it raises the legitimate question: why doesn’t anyone drink Marsala anymore?
Palate
The rich nose with its Bacchic superlatives reveals itself very disciplined on the palate: the texture is characterized by the barrel aging, which provides aromatic guidance from vanilla and tonka bean. The citrus excesses are reflected on the palate, but are subordinated to the powerful nutty notes and mild spices. The salty character of the wine is a fundamental characteristic, bringing all the aromatic strands together in an orchestral finish.
