Product description for Manincor Mason di Mason DOC 2018 (bio)
Info
The site is also known as Mazzon and covers four hectares. The plateau is located at 400 to 450 m above sea level and has a southerly exposure. Cool winds ensure constant ventilation and cooling. Mason di Mason is made from 100% Pinot Noir. Pinot Noir is an Alpine word for Spätburgunder or Pinot Noir. The plots are harvested and vinified individually. The skins are fermented in wooden vats with natural yeasts. A three-week maceration, supported by double daily fermentation, is followed by aging in barriques for twelve months. The proportion of new barrels is approximately 50%. Racking off the lees and blending the best barrels takes place after this one-year aging period. Mason di Mason contains only the best barrels from the selection of the best plots.
Colour
Dense ruby red, light to slightly rust-red rim
Nose
Mason di Mason from 2018 displays abundant earthy notes on the nose. Damp forest floor, wet limestone, a hint of moss. Ethereal pine needles and tree bark follow suit. Red pepper, juniper, and cinnamon follow suit. Elderberry, wild cherries, cranberries, and strawberries are clearly recognizable in the fruit, but by no means dominate the nose. Lovage, fresh garden herbs, and a hint of sage provide herbal spice. A hint of cigar box and a very subtle nuance of smoke lurks in the background of this dark and exciting nose.
Palate
The first sip is like biting into a handful of sour cherries. Endlessly juicy. High intensity and crisp acidity ensure a very good first impression of this Pinot Noir. Contrary to the dark, spicy nose, the palate reveals itself full of finesse, elegance, and plenty of character. The acidity cuts across the fruit as sharp as a razor blade. It’s both stimulating and challenging. The high astringency demands deep sips.

Wine Advocate
Score: 94
A late release to the market (September 2021), this organic wine is only produced in the best vintages. They have grown these grapes according to biodynamic principles, in fact, since 2005.) From a mild and cool vintage, the Manincor 2018 Alto Adige Pinot Nero Mason di Mason opens to a profound and rich center of gravity with layers of dark fruit, wild plum and blackcurrant. Those pretty fruit tones are followed by a light shading of spice and smoke with hints of blue flower, rose and peat moss. The wine covers the entire Pinot Nero spectrum, but it offers a slightly rich and dark personality all the while. This was a release of 4,000 bottles.
