Product description for Luneau-Papin Gula-Ana AOP 2020 (bio)

Wine Information

This Muscadet, made from the Melon de Bourgogne variety, comes from the La Butte de la Roche vineyard in the village of Le Loroux-Bottereau. The vines were planted in 1974. The soil consists of coarsely crystalline peridotite and serpentinite – a metamorphic rock that developed from peridotite. Both rocks are of magmatic origin. This magma formed the La Butte de la Roche vineyard. The red-ochre soil is unique and famous in the Pays Nantais. In the past, feudal lords owned a castle on the ridge of the hill. The plots belong to the Cru Communal Goulaine. This cru has existed in Nantais since the late 1990s. The Goulaine is the river that flows through the vineyards and flows into the Loire. From the vantage point on La Butte de la Roche, you have a view over the Goulaine marshland. The wine is named after this: Gula means throat or mouth, while Ana means swamp in Gallic. The hand-picked grapes were pressed in a pneumatic press, with the strength and duration of pressing adapted to the respective vintage. This was followed by spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts, followed by fermentation and aging on the lees in underground, glass-lined cement cuvées and in 600-liter barrels for 20 months.

Intense straw yellow

Nose

The Muscadet Gula Ana impressively demonstrates how precisely and beautifully Pierre-Marie Luneau can combine the special terroir of La Butte de la Roche with his idea of aging in cement and wood. The Muscadet is elegant, complex, fresh, and juicy all at once. The bright fruit radiates not only in its colour. The aroma is bright and inviting, reminiscent of yellow apples, mirabelle plums, and kumquats, with a hint of lanolin, crushed stone, and salt. Gula Ana presents itself as precise, clear, and fresh, with a hint of the Atlantic in its juicy fruit.

Palate

On the palate, the wine balances the fruit, which presents itself very similarly to the nose: bright, juicy, and ripe, yet crisp. Above all, the juiciness is at the forefront here, especially since the juice combines directly with elegant acidity, deep minerality, and a striking saltiness to create a wine that’s hard to put down. With air, the fruit reveals traces of ginger, a touch of tobacco, and caramel, making the Muscadet even more complex and creamy. Muscadet is rarely this complex, this deep, and this long-lasting when young. But the development at Luneau-Papin is impressive!

Wine Advocate

Score: 92

Matured two years in tanks, the 2020 Gula Ana, crafted from vines sourced at the top of the hill of Butte de la Roche, reveals a splendid and complex bouquet with aromas of lemon oil, pear, white fruits, spices and menthol, followed by an energetic mid-palate, a fleshy and round texture and a mineral, saline finish. It’s one of the most telluric Muscadet in the Luneau-Papin range.
