Information about the wine

The Hipping was first documented around 1550 under the name “Hupbuhl.” It is assumed that goats were once kept there, as Hippe means goat in the local dialect, and Buhl means hill. Our two parcels converge like a parabolic mirror at the highest point of the Hipping, and with their north-east and south-west slopes, they resemble a small, natural amphitheater. As one of the world’s most unique terroirs, the Hipping enjoys a special microclimate: Situated at elevations of 80-170 meters with a gradient of up to 60%, it enjoys unrestricted sunlight. Its barren primary rock soils, approximately 280 million years old, store the daytime warmth, while the cool night winds from the side valley preserve the acids. With sustainability, respect, and craftsmanship, HO’s goal is to help Hipping, the final piece of our vineyard portfolio on the Roter Hang, achieve new value and reputation. The grapes are strictly selected and harvested by hand, the must is spontaneously fermented, and aged in 1200-liter barrels.

Nose

The aroma of the 2022 Nierstein Hipping conveys pure minerality, dried oyster shell, sea breeze, laced with lime, kumquats, green apple, and star fruit. A cool and compact wine full of finesse and expression. It entices you to take the first sip.

Palate

Taut with invigorating acidity, it glides across the tongue, characterized by an intense salty note that pleasantly provokes and invigorates. An incredibly profound wine that seduces the senses and captivates with its finesse. A magnificent food companion! Be sure to decant and enjoy from large glasses, not too cold.

The 2022 Riesling Niersteiner Hipping Grosses Gewächs is from a parcel that faces the Rhine like a half-opened book, so there are multiple expositions. The nose is initially shy but creamy with honeydew melon and ripe tangerine notes. The palate is juicy, clear and almost bouncy in an energetic, vivid fashion. Stony spice and savoriness, reminiscent of St John’s Wort crushed on salty stone. A touch of pithiness lends the merest edge of welcome, mouth-watering bitterness. It is the zestiness that lingers.
