“Velue” is the old name of the willows that grow along the streams in the village of Velm-Götzendorf. The Velue White is a cuvée of 50% Grüner Veltliner, 25% Riesling, and 25% Muscat à Petit Grains. Naturally fermented and aged spontaneously in steel tanks and large barrels, it offers immediate enjoyment. The grapes were harvested by hand, some pressed after a short maceration period, and a small portion was fermented on the skins in amphorae. Velue wines represent individual, yet uncomplicated drinking pleasure with lightness and structure. The wine was aged in large used tonneaux and in stainless steel for eleven months on the lees with concretion. 10,000 bottles were produced.

Colour

Rich straw yellow with a slightly satiny sheen.

Nose

The nose of Johannes Zillinger’s 2023 Velue Weiß smells of freshly mown summer meadows and young must. Herbal infusion and strawflowers mingle with apples and small pears, grapes, and hay. Wildly spicy and yet refreshingly authentic, the nose clearly points to nature lovers and thus arouses extreme curiosity.

Palate

Super juicy, flawless natural glou-glou. Fueled by the residual carbon dioxide from the fermentation, it glitters on the palate like stardust. The musty fruit has a relaxed, natural quality, without the stall magic of natural wine. A joyful drink in the truest sense of the word, one that feels more like must than a finished wine—but that, like everything, is a matter of interpretation. Swallowing resistance, in any case, is low.
