Product description for Heinrich Blaufränkisch Edelgraben Leithaberg DAC 2017 (bio)

What Gernot and Heike have built over the past few years is beyond remarkable! He started with one hectare of his own vineyard and now cultivates over 100 hectares around Gols and on the Leithaberg. All vineyards are farmed biodynamically. Years ago, Gernot demonstrated the potential of Gols’s vineyards with the legendary Salzberg, but also with the Pannobile. From his home in Gols, he always had his eye on the Leithaberg. He began buying grapes from there early on, but it wasn’t until 2006 that he was able to acquire the vineyards from his grape supplier. In the cellar, everything is set up to ensure the grapes and wines are processed as gently as possible. Fermentation and aging usually take place in wood and, increasingly, in amphorae; even the whites are often skin-fermented and minimally sulfurized, yet still possess the typical Heinrich precision and purity.

Character

In its dark, ruby-red hue, it offers a deep insight into the Edelgraben. This requires time, air, and at least a large glass. With the grating, yet soothing voice of a gentleman baritone, this Blaufränkisch speaks of precise dark berry fruit, earthiness, and peppery spice; and easily transcends two octaves. Aware of its unbridled power, it presents itself on the palate as powerful and grippy, secretly creating space for itself, yet is positively unsettling, with sensitive consideration and detailed finesse. In a successful balancing act between instinct and reason, the glass guides you by the hand. The density of the 2015 Edelgraben, detached from heaviness, points the way along its stony finish and reaffirms the truth: “There is strength in calm.” This Blaufränkisch has its roots in old vineyards on the southeast-facing slopes of the Leitha Mountains in Breitenbrunn, which slope toward Lake Neusiedl. These vineyards are characterized by the region’s typical fossil-rich limestone and sand-limestone, as well as mica schist.

Origin

Bottled in the eternal cycle of nature, with considerable manual labour and care. The vineyards were cultivated biodynamically according to Respekt guidelines. Hand-picked in early October, spontaneous fermentation, left on the skins for three weeks in a wooden fermentation rack, gently pressed with a basket press, and aged for 28 months in used 500-liter oak barrels.

Wine Advocate

Score: 94

Heinrich’s 2017 Blaufränkisch Ried Edelgraben opens with a pure, intense, concentrated and meaty nose from crystalline soils (red slate), and it’s nicely reductive. Fleshy, with graphite and slate notes, this is a silky, elegant and fresh red wine with an intense, savory and long finish that is full of energy, salt, tension and promise. A superb red again from Heike and Gernot Heinrich.
