The Schlossberg is located around Winkelberg Castle. The rows of vines face south and form the edge of the Wagram valley. The vines are approximately 40 years old and grow at an altitude of 220 meters. Loess forms the fertile soil. Beneath this lies a layer of Danube pebbles, which in turn rests on a layer of clay and maritime sediments. After manual harvesting, the grapes are fermented spontaneously in 2000-liter oak barrels and allowed to rest on the lees for two months before being bottled without filtration or fining.

Colour

Juicy, bright lemon yellow with green reflections.

Nose

The nose varies seductively between green and yellow. Lime, kaffir lime leaves, and a hint of bergamot on the one hand. On the other, there are hints of khaki, mirabelle plum, and pear. Wonderfully balanced. The ethereal, earthy character of the kaffir lime is particularly captivating. Fennel, artichoke, and a touch of sugar beet complement this very well. A hint of mint and eucalyptus provide it with a cooling, ethereal freshness. Hints of roasted fennel seed, stinging nettle, and a hint of verbena reveal themselves.

Palate

The first sip is immediately captivating. The fruit density is enormously present, but is concentrated very well into a clear tendency towards the palate. It is incredibly juicy and at the same time full of density. Fortunately, the acidity repeatedly breaks through its compact core. This makes the drinking experience enormously exciting and varied. The alternating bath of yellow and green aromas continues on the palate. In the finish, the green, herbal, and citrus aromas gain the upper hand. A very appealing Grüner Veltliner, far from fullness and inertia. It is characterized by enormous life and excitement.

The 2021 Ried Schlossberg 1ÖTW Grüner Veltliner is puristic and spicy on the nose as well as slightly green and phenolic. It is powerful, tightly woven, stringent and grippy on the palate, with concentrated but not very juicy or elegant fruit. This is somewhat labored and with a strong body, a distinctive type. 13% stated alcohol. Screw cap. Tasted at Schloss Grafenegg.
