Product description for Clos du Moulin aux Moines Pommard AOC 2019 (bio)
Wine Information
Pommard lies between Beaune and Volnay, where the Côte de Beaune curves gently towards Autun. These lands formerly belonged to the Dukes of Burgundy and the Abbey of Cîteaux. One of the first to achieve AOC status in 1936, the appellation produces only red wines made from Pinot Noir. Pommard Village comes from four different plots. The smallest is in the Croix Planet vineyard, and it produces lush, full-bodied wines. Other plots in the Les Vaumuriens and Les Vignots vineyards are planted with old vines, which add finesse and structure to the final blend. These plots also provide minerality in the La Vache vineyard, a Climat in the center of the appellation. In total, fruit from around one hectare is used. The vines date from 1947, 1983, 1988, and 1999 and are planted at altitudes between 270 and 362 meters on clayey-limestone subsoil. After hand-harvesting, partial destemming, and spontaneous fermentation, the wine was aged for twelve to fifteen months in pièces and tonneaux. The proportion of new wood is less than 10%.
Colour
slightly transparent brick red
Nose
The Pommard Village opens fragrantly and florally with hints of violets and roses combined with very lightly roasted red and dark berry fruit, and above all a hint of cassis. Added to this is warm forest soil with a touch of moss and branches, but also some oak, cinnamon, smoke, and leather. The Pommard appears impressively transparent, and although it does have a few earthy components, it almost seems to float.
Palate
On the palate, the Pommard is clearly structured and noticeably more Pommard than in the nose. Here, one finds a connection to the earth in the form of a very light, yet intentional and almost romantic, touch of a goût de campagne. Overlying these are dark and cherry notes, along with some floral and minty notes. Above all, the Pommard has more tannin, making it appear firmer than the domaine’s other red wines. It is harmonious, typical of the appellation, and successful.
