Wine Information

The grapes for this wine, as the name suggests, grow on the gray slate in the steep slopes of Pünderich, predominantly in slightly higher-lying plots. The grapes are typically harvested in mid-October at approximately 85-90° Oechsle. Fermented spontaneously in old barrels.

Color

Light, radiant golden yellow with silvery reflections.

Nose

The 2023 Riesling “vom grauen Schiefer” (from the gray slate) is still somewhat restrained due to its youth, so pour it into a carafe. After sufficient aeration, an extremely finely chiseled drop opens up, enchanting with citrus, apple, distinct slate spice, and delicate smoky notes. The mineral terroir character is perfectly developed, and we are tempted to taste this beguilingly fresh Riesling directly.

Palate

Arriving on the palate, it delights us with beautiful density and juicy fruit, with apricots and vineyard peaches joining in, along with lively acidity and distinctive minerality. A wine as clear as a mountain spring. With its salty structure and low alcohol content of 11% vol., it’s fantastically stimulating, and you’ll want to empty the bottle immediately. A delight on its own and in combination with herbal cuisine.

The 2023 Riesling Riesling Vom Grauen Schiefer was picked in the central and upper part and the crest of the Marienburg site, mostly from 35-40-year-old vines. It contains lemon and fern aromas with a smoky verve on the nose. The slender palate is absolutely stony, tense and almost sinewy, while its body is vividly alive with zesty citrus.
