Directly opposite the family home on the other bank of the Moselle is the majority of the Busch family’s vineyards in the Marienburg vineyard. The former division into individual vineyards fell victim to wine legislation in the 1970s. To emphasize the specific differences within the Marienburg vineyard, Clemens Busch vinifies the plots separately and bottles the wines under the former parcel names, such as Fahrlay or Flakenlay. This allows the different slate soils (blue, gray, and red slate) and the specific microclimates to clearly express themselves in the wine. The wines, which are harvested very late, are characterized by enormous richness and power, as well as mineral substance.

Smoke, stone and fusel oil are present on the nose, setting the decidedly mineral tone for this extended-élevage and late-released offering whose lees influence has engendered an alluringly creamy texture. But at the same time, there is a hauntingly rowan-like floral note, as well as intimations of apple, hazelnut, peach and peach kernel, all of which subsequently convene on a complex and superbly sustained finish that doesn’t forget Riesling’s first duty to refresh.
