Product description for Clemens Busch Riesling (alter)native trocken 2022 (bio)

Info

The grapes for this wine come from higher-elevation plots on the steep slopes of the Pündericher Marienburg vineyard. The (alternative) native is the Busch’che variant of a Riesling-based natural wine from the Mosel. The grapes remain on the skins for 48 hours until pressing. Spontaneous fermentation takes place in 1000-liter wooden barrels, and the wine matures there for 14 months. You can taste not only the origin but also the method of production. At 1.5 g/l, it is consistently dry with low alcohol and a present acidity of 6.5 g/l.

Color

Bright straw yellow with green reflections.

Nose

You can clearly smell the winemaker, his origins, but also the contact with the skins and yeast—in other words, his signature. In my opinion, the Clemens Busch winery has made another quantum leap with 2021. The nose is enormously versatile. Candied ginger, honeydew melon, but also lemongrass and fennel are present. It fluctuates extremely. The fruit is clear and offers a mixture of exotic and local nuances. Honeydew melon sits next to pineapple. Yellow apples shine alongside white peach and a magnificent pear. Mint, lemongrass, and coriander offer a more Far Eastern herbal spice. Finally, a vegetal touch of fennel and anise finishes.

Palate

On the palate, its “alternative” method dominates even more noticeably than on the palate. It seems taut and incredibly tightly knit. This Riesling really builds up pressure on the palate. And it does so without any melting, oiliness, or heaviness. The fine tannins blend wonderfully with the tart and acidic characteristics. The fruit also appears less tropical on the palate and clearly dominates the stone fruit. The Southeast Asian herbs come into their own in the finish. Always paired with plenty of yellow apple peel. Astringent and pleasantly tart.

Score: 89

The 2022 Riesling (alter)native is from the steep slate sites on the Marienburg shore. It is made with a very low addition of sulfur dioxide, like the LS, but from the other bank of the Mosel. The nose has a tender slate note and a touch of ripe Amalfi lemon, but both are rather tender impressions. The palate is very slim and wonderfully salty, with a texture underlining the bone-dry nature of the wine. A slight hint of bitter grapefruit pith pleasantly tingles on the finish. Very slender.
