Product description for Cirelli Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo DOC Amphora 2023 (bio)
The vines for Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo grow on lean clay-limestone soils and come from the winery’s own and leased vineyards. The grapes are harvested by hand, destemmed, and gently crushed before being drawn off into stainless steel tanks and macerated on the skins for a good six hours. The skins are then separated from the must and gently pressed before the indigenous yeasts initiate alcoholic fermentation. The Cerasuolo matures in amphorae, where it also undergoes malolactic fermentation before bottling.
Color
Transparent cherry red, bright and clear. Nose: The nose of the 2023 Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo Amphora by Francesco Cirelli fires red fruit from every available source: sour cherries, sweet cherry, amarena cherries, and a touch of cola cherry outline its stone fruit character. Added to this are pickled Mieze Schindler strawberries, a touch of hibiscus, and raspberry syrup from small wild raspberries. Framed by the delicately spicy scent of a summer meadow, it exudes pure hedonism.
Palate
On the palate, the sparkling red fruit is formidably flanked by a delicately tart phenolic note that congenially channels its rich juiciness. Its texture is almost powdery, with its polished tannin structure; the ripe acidity acts like a driving beat behind the radiant fruit, illuminating the palate with a rich ruby, so that you’ll gulp down one glass after another, thirsting. Too fresh for a red, too strong for a rosé, the Cerasuolo is the ultimate secret weapon at the table or to quench a thirst.

Score: 93
Crushed rocks and woodland berries are offset by a burst of sweet spice as the 2023 Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo Amphora comes to life in the glass. It opens with a pretty inner sweetness offset by a crunch of tart cranberry and sour cherry. This finishes juicy in character and remarkably fresh, leaving rosy inner florals and a tinge of citrus. This is a lot of fun to taste. Readers should note that production was down 85% in 2023.
