Information about the Wine

As early as 1456, “Mersbin” was listed in the interest book of the monks of the Weissenburg Abbey in Alsace as the origin of excellent wines. Even today, this vineyard is still considered the best location in Gimmeldingen. Until 2014, we used the name Mandelgarten; from the 2015 vintage onwards, we have reverted to the site’s historical name: Meerspinne. It lies on a foothill that slopes southeastward toward the Rhine. Located at the entrance to the Gimmeldingen Valley, the microclimate is characterized by large day-night differences caused by the nightly cold air current from the Palatinate Forest, which ensures fine acidity and freshness. The hill’s subsoil consists of solid limestone. Over the centuries, a mixture of red sandstone scree eroded downslope and windblown calcareous loess was deposited on this limestone ridge.

100% selective hand-picking in small crates, spontaneous fermentation in large wooden barrels.

Colour

Light golden yellow with delicate green reflections.

Nose

The 2022 Meerspinne Riesling Große Lage presents itself with cool finesse and complex fruit of citrus, quince, apple, and orange peel. All framed in a compact and concise minerality. At this stage, decanting it into a carafe is beneficial, as it then reveals herbal aromas and a hint of ginger and coriander alongside the cool, stony notes.

Palate

Delicate yet dense, it flows across the palate, tickling it with salty notes and invigorating acidity. Its delicately tart notes and moderate alcohol content of 12% vol invite you to indulge in this wine. It’s a wine that enjoys fish and shellfish dishes just as much as it does savoury and spicy vegetable dishes. If you want to enjoy it in its youthful stage, it should definitely be decanted and served not too cold in a sufficiently large glass.

The 2022 Riesling Gimmeldinger Meerspinne Grosses Gewächs is right underneath the Kapellenberg, on loess and loam with some calcareous veins. An initial whiff of fennel seed sets a savory tone. The palate adds a whole lot of apple-like, tart juiciness to this, bright, flowing, vivid and rounded, yet always laced with fine citrus. The finish is totally clear-cut, clear as a bell, with a zesty finish and a long, pure finish. (Bone-dry)
