Product description for Chiara Boschis, E.Pira & Figli Barolo Via Nuova DOCG 2018 (bio)
Colour
Sparkling cherry red with subtle orange to brown reflections and a light rim.
Nose
The nose could be described as quite typical of Piedmont in the classic sense. Earthy nuances meet dark fruits with plenty of spice. The Via Nuova single-vineyard cuvée enchants with ripe plum, elderberry, and cassis, as well as a hint of sweet cherry. Blackberry, raspberry, and mulberry resonate only subtly in the background. It thrives on balsamic notes reminiscent of warm leather. Delicately roasted coffee beans appear alongside melted nougat. A hint of roasted hazelnut provides additional intensity. Very subtly, it evokes forest floor and dried porcini mushrooms. It has a fine note of lovage and marjoram. Juniper, cubeb pepper, and a touch of white pepper round it out with ethereal excursions.
Palate
On the palate, it reveals an enormously seductive interplay of fruit, acidity, and the finest tannins. The fruit initially stands out with its enormous succulence. Stimulating and challenging at the same time. The berries emerge extremely charmingly in combination with the spicy nuances. The acidity then takes hold and heats up the fruit considerably. This creates great drinking pleasure and offers a good flow. The acidity not only pushes it along, but also ensures a considerably cooler impression than the warm 2018 vintage would suggest. The tannins then come to the fore in top form and are quite grippy. Supported by the nutty and earthy aromas, the tannins come across as mature. Very fine-pored and simply melting on the palate. The finish is elegant and delicate. The nutty and earthy aromas now characterize the flavour profile in the aftertaste. It suddenly appears strikingly slim and stimulates saliva flow excellently, leaving us craving more.

Score: 94
This is an organic blend of fruit from six MGA sites: Terlo and Liste (in Barolo), Ravera di Monforte and Mosconi (in Monforte d’Alba) and Gabutti and Baudana (in Serralunga d’Alba). The 2018 Barolo Via Nuova is fermented in steel and aged in oak according to time-tested local tradition. This mid-weight blended Barolo has a more prominent herbal or balsam signature at the back of red and purple fruits, licorice and pressed violet. Production is 13,000 bottles.
