Wine Information

The Pinot Noir comes from the 9.41-hectare Premier Cru Île de Vergelesses vineyard in Pernand-Vergelesses. The vineyard is framed by Savigny’s Les Vergelesses and Pernand’s Les Vergelesses. The quality of the terroir is superior to that of any other Premier Cru vineyard in the area and is essentially at Grand Cru level. Similar to that on the Corton hill, the terroir of Pernand-Vergelesses is characterized by siliceous and calcareous red marl with a high iron content. The domaine has 13.31 hectares of east-facing vines, some of which are 40 years old on average, and some are even 80 years old.

Nose

The 2017 Pinot Noir from the core Île de Vergelesses vineyard initially displays quite red berry notes. Currants play a prominent role at the beginning, initially red, then increasingly more black, and also a few cherries. The wine appears spicy with a slight oak influence and is overall still shy in its appearance.

Palate

On the palate, the Île de Vergelesses is considerably warmer than in the still quite cool nose. It is primarily cherries and a few notes of wild berries that ensure juiciness. The fruit is round and warm, as is the almost flattering tannin. The acidity in this wine is quite restrained. The underlying minerality is more present and lingers into the long, warm-fruity finish. The Île de Vergelesses, which, like almost all Chandon de Briailles wines, is slightly sulfurized, is distinctly different from its unsulfured counterpart. The former is already inviting to drink, but this wine needs a bit more aging.
