Wine Information

In 2021, there were only 59 hectares of vineyards on Ibiza, and the island’s five wineries produced just 127,000 liters of wine, according to the Balearic government. Given these small quantities, it’s easy to imagine that hardly any wine leaves the party island. One of the few is the “Blacknose” by the Swiss Peter and Tino Lehner. The two brothers named this red wine blend, made from international and Spanish grape varieties, after the Blacknose sheep of their Valais homeland. Their vineyards on Ibiza are located on a finca at 320 meters above sea level and have marl and sandstone soils. The Lehners ferment the grapes after a cold maceration in steel tanks, followed by at least one year of aging in used French oak barrels.

Nose

The Blacknose 2021 displays pronounced primary fruit flavours of cherry and plum. It has both red and dark fruit notes; the nose is ripe and fresh at the same time. A subtle herbal and tobacco spice can be detected in the background.

Palate

The fruity character, carried by cherry and plum, is immediately noticeable on the palate. The Blacknose 2021 presents itself incredibly juicy and round, and with its softness and polished tannins, is a true delight. Overall, the red wine displays a beautiful balance between ripe fruit, fresh acidity, and medium body. The 15 percent alcohol content is also very well integrated; the wine has nothing overripe or heavy about it. The stimulating spiciness on the finish further contributes to the drinking pleasure. Thus, the Blacknose 2021 is an excellent example of an aromatic, fresh red wine from the Mediterranean.
