Information about the Wine

Over the past ten years, the Artuke winery has catapulted itself into the absolute top ranks of Rioja producers. Their “Paso las Mañas” is a single-varietal Tempranillo from the high altitudes of the Basque Rioja (Alavesa). It comes from a 700-meter-high, chalky vineyard at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria, which is also exposed to strong winds. The unique terroir, coupled with the winery’s focus on freshness and finesse, produces exceptional wines, which is what this red wine represents. Careful extraction and aging in large foudres testify to the approach of highlighting the terroir, which the new Rioja stands for and of which Artuke is one of the most important representatives.

This red wine presents itself with a seductive bouquet of earthy minerality, red fruits, and herbal notes with high intensity. Overall, the nose is wonderfully balanced and compelling. It is expressive, but there is nothing unnecessarily playful about it.

Palate

The Paso las Mañas 2021 is fresh and clear like a mountain stream. It has fine-grained, almost chalky tannins, enormous grip, and feels almost vibrant in the mouth. Overall, it has impressive balance, energy, and length. It is aromatically expressive, has juicy, complex primary fruit, and is at the same time straightforward and minerally. This is an extremely good wine, to put it briefly. Many Riojas twice as expensive could do with a fight.

The 2021 Paso Las Mañas was produced with grapes from a vineyard in the village of Samaniego at 700 meters above sea level. The plot was planted in 1990 and 2013 on limestone and rocky soils. It fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in 3,500-liter oak foudre for 12 months. It has an explosive nose of raspberries, high pitched and showy, aromatic, open and expressive. It has a moderate 13.6% alcohol and a pH of 3.4, terrific balance and very fine tannins. Delicious. 8,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2022.
