Product description for Artazu Pasos de San Martin 2016
Colour
Dark cherry red, light rim, violet reflections
Nose
This Grenache from Navarra seems to have arrived in the glass. The few years of bottle aging suit it very well, and it has been able to shed its primarily fruity garb. Cassis, sweet cherries, and plums buzz in the glass. However, it is much more alive with clove, cardamom, and juniper. A touch of tree bark, spruce needles, and cedar wood leave distinct ethereal traces. White pepper and cinnamon round it out well.
Palate
The first sip is phenomenally cool. Fortunately, the Grenache thrives on a gripping acid structure. With plenty of pull and flow, it makes its way along. It is surprisingly linear and lean. The fruit appears small-berry and acidic. The aromas of the nose come through again in a similar combination. The aftertaste is still present for a long time and presents mainly sour cherries in large doses.

Surprisingly enough, I found more Mediterranean notes of herbs, oregano and sun-dried tomato in the 2016 Pasos de San Martín than in the 2017 Santa Cruz de Artazu, despite the cooler vintage and the cooler zone in San Martín de Unx. This had a short élevage of only seven months in 500-liter French oak barrels, and the oak feels very integrated, with the wine coming through as floral and fruit driven. There is always an acute note of violets in this wine. This is nicely textured with fine-grained chalky tannins and more freshness on the palate than what the notes in the nose might point at. 24,000 bottles produced.

Deep, brilliant garnet. Vibrant red and dark berry, baking spice and floral scents show fine definition and mineral lift. Juicy and focused on the palate, offering lively black raspberry, cherry and boysenberry flavors that steadily deepen and spread out with air. Shows impressive energy on the persistent, gently tannic finish, which repeats the cherry and floral notes.
