Product description for Huet Le Mont Moelleux 1ère Trie 2020 (bio)
Wine Information
Le Mont lies above the tuff caves and east of the Huet vineyard on the first plateau of Vouvray, the so-called Première Côte, and faces south. It was first mentioned in the 15th century and has been highly valued ever since. Like the other two vineyards, Le Mont, with its nine hectares, is solely owned by the Huet vineyard and was acquired by Gaston Huet in 1957 as the last of the three vineyards. It is characterized by several meters of deep topsoil, namely a pebbly, sometimes fist-sized flint, known locally as perron, in deep green clay. The base is the usual Turonian tuff limestone. The harvest took place in 2020 between September 7 (the earliest date in the winery’s history) and September 25. Since the vintage was characterized by strong sunshine and warmth, the wines produced were primarily residually sweet. As usual, the grapes were meticulously sorted, pressed, and fermented spontaneously. Malolactic fermentation only occurred in exceptional cases and in individual barrels. The wine was aged in used demi-muids. The Le Mont Moelleux »Première Trie« is a residually sweet wine, into which the first grapes affected by botrytis were used. Residual sweetness in this case means 91 g/l.
Color
Light golden yellow
Nose
The Le Mont Moelleux »Première Trie« has become a powerful and concentrated »Première Trie«, there is no doubt about that. It opens with notes of ripe and browned apples with their skins, oranges and their zest, apricot jam, mango chutney, and pickled quinces. This ripe fruit is accompanied by walnuts and tobacco, herbs, and rock.
Palate
On the palate, the Le Mont Moelleux »Première Trie« is lush, yet also smoky. The fruit is opulent, dense, and sweet, like a dessert course in its own right, but this sweetness is placed in the context of salty and piquant notes, accompanied by an underlying minerality and extract. This Chenin Blanc thus appears elegant and noble. The acidity here is rather restrained, but still permeates the wine and gives it a pleasant bite. The Vouvray has by no means reached its drinking window yet, but it is well worth watching as it develops to its full potential.
