Product description for Huet Clos du Bourg demi-sec 2023 (bio)
Wine Information
The Clos du Bourg lies above the church of Vouvray and comprises six hectares of vineyards surrounded by an old stone wall – hence the name “Clos.” It is one of the oldest Grand Cru parcels in France, first mentioned in the 7th century. The vineyard’s shallow soil consists of clay with flint and chalk inclusions. It is located on a typical Turonian tuffeau limestone cliff. Here, the vines reach the tuff after just one meter. In 2023, the vineyards in Vouvray were severely affected by Drosophila suzukii, the spotted-wing drosophila. This required rigorous quality management. Huet already has several harvests per vineyard for the individual Chenin Blanc varieties. This year, every single berry had to be inspected, and at least 25% of the harvest was discarded. As usual, the grapes were meticulously sorted, pressed, and spontaneously fermented during the many harvests. Malolactic fermentation only occurred in exceptional cases and in individual barrels. The wine was aged in used demi-muids. The 2023 Clos du Bourg Demi-Sec has 21 grams of residual sugar.
Colour
medium straw yellow
Nose
The 2023 Clos du Bourg Demi-Sec is a delicate, fine, and comparatively fruity Chenin Blanc with notes of orange blossom, elderflower, and honey, candied orange zest, and slightly bitter notes of kumquats, smoke, and rock.
Palate
On the palate, the Vouvray is incredibly charming and open, with just the right balance of noticeable residual sweetness, acidity, tart notes, and juicy fruit. It offers a full, rounded opening with plenty of yellow fruit from quince and pear, accompanied by a sustaining acidity and a wonderful blend of depth and lightness. It is extremely seductive, possessing fullness yet still appearing light and airy.

Score: ?
The 2023 Vouvray Demi-Sec Clos du Bourg is like a child hiding under a blanket, much like the 2023 Sec. It coats the palate with its caress. The concentration and precision are all there, but it is closed aromatically and rather restricted—like a flower waiting to open. I can’t wait to taste this again in a few months’ time. There’s a lot of potential here, but it wouldn’t be right to provide a rating at this moment.
