Description

Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Heimbourg 2021 (bio)

Heimbourg is a small, single vineyard of approximately 9 hectares, located on a southwest-facing slope, overlooking Turckheim and the Munster Valley. The soil is very thin and lies almost directly on the Oligocene parent rock, characterized by its high limestone and iron content, which gives it its red colour. The Riesling was planted in the mid-1990s, before Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. Unlike its direct neighbor, Clos Jebsal, the grapes remain healthy due to the influence of valley winds and the poorer, rocky soil. However, the sun-drenched exposure can greatly accelerate ripening, and like most vineyards in Turckheim, the harvest must be carried out with precision to avoid overripeness and excessive residual sweetness. The 2018 vintage demonstrates perfect ripeness combined with very good acidity.

Wine Information

Olivier Humbrecht: The Heimbourg single vineyard site is situated on a small, steep hill rising from the Vosges Mountains east of Turckheim. Its steep slopes run southwest to west on a marl-limestone-sandstone terroir dating back to the Oligocene. These coastal, ferruginous limestones contain a high proportion of silica, have a high active limestone content (over 45%), and are relatively poor in clay. All of these elements ensure excellent drainage and allow the Riesling grape variety to ripen slowly while maintaining good acidity.

Vintage Information

This vineyard has the capacity for vigorous ripening with a late harvest. To obtain a dry wine, the harvest date must be chosen precisely. Always a long fermentation (one of the longest in 2021) before the wine dries out.

Colour

Light, radiant golden yellow.

Nose

The 2021 Riesling Heimbourg offers notes of flint and limestone, initially reminiscent of a complex white Burgundy. It should definitely be aerated immediately so that it can unfold in all its beauty. Aromas of grapefruit, orange, ginger, and angelica open the bottle, with notes of forest floor and truffle emerging after a longer opening.

Palate

A wine as crystal-clear as a mountain spring, seemingly about to explode on the palate: The delicate citrus notes float across the tongue, accompanied by an equally delicate and complex acidity that, combined with salty notes, leaves a true umami sensation on the finish. A poem in itself and an invigorating, inspiring food companion. Those impatient to open it now are advised to decant it at least a day in advance and enjoy it not too cold from large Burgundy glasses.

Vinous

Score: 92

The 2021 Riesling Heimbourg is from a steep limestone plot in Turckheim, with just a little clay and topsoil. It is a hot west and southwest-facing site with an average vine age of 22 years. The tell-tale reduction clouds the nose. However, the palate comes in with a striking lemony, zesty aspect. This is juicy, totally approachable, flowy, supple and bone-dry. Youthful and utterly citrus-focused with pure, bright lemon flavors. (Bone-dry)
