Product description for Thomas Morey Chassagne-Montrachet Vielles Vignes Rouge AOC 2023
Few people are aware that around 40% of Chassagne-Montrachet’s vineyards are planted with Pinot Noir. Pinot Noir takes a back seat to white wines because they are so exceptional, while red wines are “just very good.” But this has one particular advantage: you can get excellent quality red wine here at a remarkably good price. And if you look at the classic Le Vin de Bourgogne by Camille Rodier, who has always tended to prefer the Côte de Nuits when it comes to red wine, you’ll find that he believes the red Chassagne-Montrachets from Clos St. Jean and Morgeot can compete with many Côte de Nuits crus. The Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes comes from the three plots of Bottes, Clos Bernot, and Dessus des Murs near the village, which were planted in 1933, 1960, and 1969, respectively. The newer plot has predominantly brown, loamy soils, while the others are more sandy and permeable, located on a mountain ridge. The yield from these old vines is generally low, rarely reaching 45 hl per hectare. The largely destemmed grapes are fermented with indigenous yeasts in a combination of neutral barrels and tanks. Malolactic fermentation takes place naturally. The proportion of new wood is around 20%. Sulfurization only takes place in the last six months in the barrel, and this is done several times with minimal doses, so that the wine never exceeds 35 mg/l overall.

Transparent ruby red
Nose
Thomas Morey’s Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes 2023 presents itself subtly fragrant with notes of primarily dark berries, cherries, red plums, and hints of tar and cola. There are also hints of crushed stone and some undergrowth.
Palate
On the palate, the Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes presents itself as quite firm and still undeveloped, with muted tannins and a pleasant acidity structure. The fruit also seems quite firm, but ripe and warm. The wood appears in the background with a slightly nutty and smoky-roasted note. Added to this is an earthiness typical of the wine, reminiscent of Pommard. Overall, this is a dark, juicy Pinot Noir with a touch of spiciness and a cool, mineral touch.
