Product description for Huet Le Mont sec 2022 (bio)
Wine Information
The Le Mont vineyard lies above the tuff caves and east of the Huet estate on the first plateau of Vouvray, the so-called Première Côte, and faces south. The vineyard was first mentioned in the 15th century and has been highly valued ever since. Like the other vineyards, Le Mont, with its nine hectares, is solely owned by the Huet estate and was acquired by Gaston Huet in 1957 as the last of the three vineyards. It has a topsoil several meters deep with a pebbly, sometimes fist-sized flint, known locally as perron, and deep green clay. The base is the usual Turonian tuff limestone. The harvest began in 2022 on September 8th (the second earliest date in the winery’s history) and ended six weeks later (the harvesters have never harvested for so long; this year there were 24). Heat waves and drought led to very heterogeneous ripening grapes. This made it possible to produce all varieties of Chenin Blanc, from the base wine for Pétillants to single-vineyard wines. As usual, the grapes were meticulously sorted, pressed, and spontaneously fermented during the many harvests. Malolactic fermentation only occurred in exceptional cases and in individual barrels. The wine was aged in used demi-muids. The residual sugar in this 2022 wine is 5.7 grams.
Colour
Medium straw yellow
Nose
If you taste the 2022 Le Mont alongside the Chenins from the other two vineyards, it presents itself absolutely Typical of the terroir. This means that it appears much more reserved, even shy, and also offers the typical dark smokiness of tuff and quartz. With air, it then becomes more open, retaining the delicate flint aroma but also presenting notes of violet, apple, apple skin, pear, and quince.
Palate
On the palate, the 2022 Le Mont Sec appears silky and juicy with great depth and substance. The Chenin is mouth-filling and powerful with clear notes of sweet and tart cider apples and pears with their skins. Cider and perry notes can be found here. Added to this are kumquats, spices, and again the typical smoky note. It is a piquant, stony, and mineral wine that appears salty and finishes gracefully.
