The 2020 Ancestral from Ester and Carles Ortiz is the current vintage of this exceptional sparkling wine. The vineyards belong to the Finca La Sínia, and the Pla de Manlleu blend lies below the Castello de Selma. The Ancestral consists of Chenin Blanc and Marsanne, and the vines grow at an altitude of around 750 meters on clay and limestone soils. The grapes are crushed and left on the skins and stems for a day before being pressed, and the wine finally begins to ferment until it is bottled.

Colour

Rich yellow with a satiny sheen and restrained perlage.

Nose

On the nose, the 2020 Selma Ancestral behaves like a diva: with a fine reduction, notes of pea greens, green beans, and zucchini blossoms emerge under percussion caps and matches with a little air, before stewed apple and small cider pears appear. An Ancestral that doesn’t shy away from large glasses and/or sufficient aeration, e.g., in a carafe. Initially a somewhat unwieldy colleague, where a little time, goodwill, and engagement with its nature can be extremely enriching. Challenging, yet enormously rewarding.

Palate

On the first sip, the mousse is very restrained, acting more as a drinking accelerator than as the main character. The 2020 vintage seems a little fuller than usual, with its creamy texture and a hint of residual sweetness, which perfectly reflect the warm year. Beneath the reduction lie tender, stewed apples, a hint of lemon, fennel, and delicate yeasty notes reminiscent of warm brioche. An exceptional Ancestral, beyond the aperitif situation.
