Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Roche Volcanique 2019 (bio)
(Olivier Humbrecht).
Wine Information
When we acquired the Clos-Saint-Urbain vineyard in the Grand Cru Rangen in 1977, about half of the land was not planted with vines and needed to be replanted. This very steep vineyard requires a lot of hard manual labour, and some areas were abandoned in the mid-20th century. In most vintages, the vines planted in the 1970s and 1980s are separated from the very old vines that qualify as Grand Crus. These wines clearly demonstrate the authenticity of a volcanic geology that is unique in Alsace. They are also cultivated in the same way as the older vines (e.g., ploughing with a winch).
Vine Information
The biggest difference is the size of the harvest. Roche Volcanique is produced with low yields, but the older vines produce even less! For these “younger vines,” we aim for very healthy grapes (no noble rot) to produce a dry wine. For some inexplicable reason, the wines from this vineyard also tend to ferment quickly and would retain little residual sweetness, as is the case here in 2019.
Colour
Deep golden yellow with delicate coppery reflections.
Nose
The nose of the 2019 Pinot Gris Roche Volcanique beautifully reveals its origins, with smoky and flint notes rising from the glass. It possesses charm and conveys the impression of plump fruit reminiscent of ripe oranges, orange jam, mango relish, and candied lemon peel. Sweet Far Eastern spices reminiscent of cardamom, curry, candied ginger, and licorice are also present. A true firework of flavours.
Palate
With beautiful fullness and delicately provocative piquancy, it flows over the tongue; its delicate sweetness flirts perfectly with the smoky aromas and fine tannins. The long finish thrives on freshness and lively acidity. Olivier Humbrecht has perfected the Pinot Gris with its delicate sweetness, so that it overflows with freshness and vibrancy. A wonderful food accompaniment that can age beautifully. If possible, decant and enjoy from large glasses.
