Description

Product description for La Soufrandière Pouilly-Vinzelles Climat “Les Quarts” AOC 2020 (bio)

Wine Information

The Les Quarts vineyard is undoubtedly one of the best terroirs in the Pouilly-Vinzelles appellation. The beautifully situated vineyard faces southeast and is home to 48- to 80-year-old Chardonnay vines planted on siliceous, and especially iron-rich, clay and limestone soils from the Bajocian region (Jura). The wines produced here are long-lasting, balanced. Hand-harvested from August 24 to 25, 2020, whole-bunch pressing and spontaneous fermentation, followed by aging for 17 months, initially in pièces for 11 months and then in foudres with 100% malolactic fermentation. The added sulphur is 40 mg/l.

Nose

Les Quarts is a southern Burgundy, but in 2020 it is impressively bright and crisp. Its aromas are reminiscent of white blossoms, pencil shavings with graphite and wood, a hint of oregano and verbena, blanched almonds, and yellow and green citrus fruits. This appears lively, fresh, clear, and precise, and, after two somewhat fuller, yet equally balanced vintages, follows on from 2017 in particular.

Palate

On the palate, the wine is typically powerful and firm, with a light tannin and, this year, a particularly powerful, intense acidity that creates tension. It’s astonishing that the wine underwent 100% malolactic fermentation. The Bret brothers harvest the grapes with precision, so that the citrusy bitterness combines with the silkiness of the yeast aging, the tannin and a certain meatiness to create a very successful whole.

Wine Advocate

Score: 89?

Exhibiting aromas of pear, citrus oil and bread dough, the 2020 Pouilly-Vinzelles Les Quarts is a medium to full-bodied, broad and textural wine with ripe acids, moderate concentration and a saline finish. Bottled with comparatively high turbidity and not much in terms of free sulfites, it’s missing some of the precision the Bret brothers’ wines used to show.

Vinous

Score: 92

The 2020 Pouilly-Vinzelles Climat Les Quarts has an intense nose with fresh lime, lemon zest and wet limestone aromas. The palate is beautifully balanced with a fine bead of acidity, a little spicy with a tang of marmalade towards the persistent finish. It has a sense of confidence about it and will surely repay bottle age.
