Description

Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Heimbourg 2018 (bio)

Christoph Raffelt: The juiciness and creaminess on the palate are wonderful. The Heimbourg delivers intense stone fruit and ripe citrus fruit, along with supple tannins and, above all, a vibrant, fresh acidity with a salty minerality. The combination of apple and apple skin, quince, a hint of hops, and wax is also evident on the palate. The Pinot Gris has a long finish and remains fresh and charming until the very last second.

Wine Information

The Heimbourg vineyard is one of the small individual sites in the secondary and tertiary fault area in Turckheim. In this area, the geology varies greatly over short distances, explaining why these vineyards are so small (Clos Jebsal, Boland, and Heimbourg). Heimbourg is the only one that lies from southwest to west on limestone soils with a low Olyzocene content. The upper part of the vineyard, which is most exposed to the winds, is planted with Pinot grapes. It is essentially similar to the Rotenberg on the other side of the valley, but with a much lower iron content, and therefore often produces more aromatic and expressive wines that are already very beautiful in their youth. (Olivier Humbrecht)

Vineyard information

This vineyard is capable of producing both a dry and a sweet style, depending on the development of the noble rot. For several years now, our goal has been to harvest the grapes ripe, but without any overripe character and definitely without botrytis, so that the wine can ferment as dry as possible without the use of commercial yeast. Easy to say… However, in 2018, ripeness developed at a normal pace, so this was relatively easy to achieve. The wine fermented very well and was bottled dry after 18 months on the lees. (Olivier Humbrecht)

Colour

Radiant, light golden yellow with delicate pink reflections.

Nose

The 2018 Pinot Gris Heimbourg presents itself with great elegance and aristocratic coolness; its chalky minerality is omnipresent and demands a carafe. Then oranges, orange zest, ginger, mango, and apricots emerge. The nose reveals an Alsatian Pinot Gris with a great arc of tension, hinting at a fresh and multifaceted palate.

Palate

Juicy and endowed with fresh acidity and a fine tannin structure, it hits the tongue. Its pronounced fruit with its chalky undertone pairs very well with intensive cuisine, but it would actually be wise to allow it some more cellar aging, because only then will it reveal its full beauty. Be sure to decant at this point and enjoy from large Burgundy glasses.
