Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Clos Windsbuhl 2022 (bio)

Wine Information

Olivier Humbrecht: Clos Windsbuhl is a historic vineyard in Alsace, dating back to the 14th century, when it was owned by the Austro-Hungarian Habsburg family. The Zind-Humbrecht estate produced its first vintage in 1988. Pinot Gris was the preferred grape variety at the time. It ripens early (the Clos has a late-ripening climate), enjoys a low-calcareous geology, and was already mentioned as a good grape variety in 1759, when the Prince of Württemberg acquired this estate. We firmly believe that Pinot Gris is one of Alsace’s best grape varieties, but it is also a needy variety, easily underperforming if not planted in the best vineyards. It is also a grape variety that produces very rich wines when planted with early sun exposure and on lighter soils. Here at Windsbuhl, Pinot Gris thrives, as the 2022 vintage demonstrates, and can produce wines of great elegance.

Colour

Bright, light golden yellow with silvery reflections.

Nose

The 2022 Pinot Gris Clos Windsbuhl exudes pure freshness and pure finesse in its aroma: lemon, lemon balm, kumquat, and young apricot combine with fresh apple and quince. Floral fragrances of elderflower and ginger hover over it. All extremely finely and subtly interwoven. Quiet and piercingly loud at the same time, what a seducer, what a mineral and multifaceted work of art.

Palate

I would not have thought that it was possible to improve the finesse and precision of Pinot Gris at Humbrecht, and I have just been proven wrong. This wine practically sweeps me away; the extremely invigorating acidity combines with an intensely salty hint, with refreshing light and yellow fruit that practically floats over the tongue and with a never-ending finish; with every sip you are tempted to take another; the acidity is so present that it is fantastically integrated into this work of art. Decanting beforehand makes it better, but it should not be enjoyed too cold from large Burgundy glasses.
