Description

Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Clos Windsbuhl 2020 (bio)

Wine Information

Olivier Humbrecht: Due to its high altitude and proximity to the Vosges Mountains, Clos Windsbuhl enjoys a late ripening period, which is why grape varieties such as Pinot Gris were favored in the past and remain the most widely planted grape variety on the Clos today. As with many other terroirs, grape ripening is influenced by current climate change: the harvest is taking place earlier, in early/mid-September, rather than mid-October or later. This development is very favorable for the production of dry wines, as botrytis (noble rot) is becoming increasingly rare.

Information on Maturation

The Pinot Gris ripens more slowly at the Windsbuhl, allowing it to retain remarkable acidity and become a dry wine, as in 2020. However, determining the harvest date is very difficult with this grape variety, and this precision requires daily ripeness checks as the harvest approaches. In 2020, the grapes were very healthy, fermentation was slow, very slow, but ultimately, to our great satisfaction, the wine was able to be aged completely dry. Bottling took place after 17 months of aging in old oak barrels and on the total lees.

Colour

Intense golden yellow.

Nose

The 2020 Pinot Gris Clos Windsbuhl exudes pure intensity on the nose, with dried apricots, honey, candied apple, and lemon dancing the round. The whole thing combines with malty notes, sesame crunch, and honey in combination with orange and thyme. Iodine-flavoured and intense, one immediately thinks of sea breezes, oyster shells, and sea spray crashing against rugged rocks.

Palate

Sweetness and acidity are perfectly balanced in this rich and juicy Pinot Gris; the distinct saltiness and invigorating freshness are extremely stimulating. It dances across the tongue and lingers in a beautiful, seemingly endless finish. A wine that perfectly complements food! Great aging potential! For those impatient to open it now, we recommend decanting it at least a day in advance and enjoying it not too cold from large Burgundy glasses.
