About the wine

Oliver Humbrecht

This wine comes from a small vineyard near the GC Goldert in Gueberschwihr, but also from selected grapes from the Hengst, Goldert, and Clos Windsbuhl vineyards. These vineyards are quite old, so it’s normal to plant a few younger ones after an old vine dies. We separate these younger vines (all under about 30 years old) at harvest, and they all end up in this wine. The common factor for all of them is a limestone-based geology. Gewürztraminer needs and loves the sun to ripen perfectly, but unlike Riesling, for example, it needs cooler soils to preserve its acidity if you want to make a somewhat richer wine. We’ve also found that limestone produces a more restrained style of Gewürztraminer, more spicy than floral, more mineral than varietal, and that’s exactly the style of this wine.

Vineyard Info

The absence of noble rot in 2020 means the grapes were very healthy, and the wine fermented quite dry and quickly.

Bright golden yellow.

Nose

The 2020 Gewurztraminer Roche Calcaire displays intense mineral notes with spicy components of anise, cardamom, and dried ginger. Its beautiful fruit is reminiscent of orange peel, firm mango, yellow plums, and ripe red apple. A subtle smoky note, the chalky imprint of the soil, and the scent of lemon verbena and linden blossom add to the appeal.

Elegant with a delicate sweetness, it hits the tongue. The style is puristic and clear, the juiciness of the bright fruits is extremely captivating and stimulating.
