Description
Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Gewürztraminer Rangen de Thann Clos-Saint-Urbain Grand Cru 2019 (bio)
Wine Information
Gewurztraminer is the least represented grape variety at Clos-Saint-Urbain. Approximately 1,500 bottles are produced annually from a small area of 0.5 hectares. Rangen has the ability to impose its flavor and character on the aromatic Gewurztraminer, which is a feat in itself, and also produces a relatively dry wine style.
Vinement Information
In almost every vintage, it is Rangen Gewurztraminer that ferments the most. The steep, south-facing slopes of Rangen lie at the end of a cooler valley and at a relatively high altitude for Alsatian vineyards (over 350 m above sea level). Gewurztraminer does not like these conditions, which explains its rarity at this Grand Cru. However, the Thur River, which flows directly below the slopes of the Rangen, moderates the climate and allows the cultivation of this grape variety if planted close to the river. The 2019 vintage was harvested much later than most other Gewurztraminers, but fermented quickly and finished almost dry.
Color
Bright, dense golden yellow.
Nose
The 2019 Gewurztraminer Clos Saint Urbain Rangen de Thann surprises with its immensely fresh aroma: orange flesh, peach, pear, grapefruit, numerous fragrant blossoms, matchstick notes, light, elegant tobacco, and citrusy ginger freshness combine with a delicate peppery note. The vital and fresh magic of 2019 is also evident here in this impressive site with the Gewurztraminer par excellence!
Palate
The palate continues with fineness and elegance – such lively acidity, such interplay, underscored by compact, complex, and impressive minerality. The juicy fruit, especially orange, combines wonderfully with its fine tannin structure; its vitality is evident here in full force. This wine floats; the higher alcohol content on the label can simply be ignored, as this delicacy, lightness, and silky appearance are unparalleled. As with so many wines from Humbrecht in 2019, the rule is: buy it and put it away. What we are presented with here is a feast, a true feast! Those who are impatient are advised to decant it a day or two in advance and enjoy it from large Burgundy glasses.

Wine Advocate
Score: 96+
From 56-year-old vines, the 2019 Clos Saint Urbain Rangen de Thann Gewurztraminer opens with a deep, clear, intense, finely spicy, leafy and mineral bouquet with notes of crushed salts and rocks, flint stones, lemongrass, citrus thyme, smoke, just-ripe mangoes, figs, lychees, kumquats, candied lemons, lemon peel, lemon chutney and herbal, iodine aromas. Full-bodied, rich, intense and very elegant on the palate, with an intense and persistent mineral structure, this is a tight and powerful yet fresh and savory Rangen with fine tannins and an almost drying mineral complexity on the finish that leaves the palate with candied sugar, lemon, tannin bitters and tons of salt. This is a great Gewürztraminer bottled in February 2021 with 14.2% stated alcohol and 9.5 grams per liter of residual sugar. Natural cork. Tasted in November 2024.
