Description
Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Gewürztraminer Rangen de Thann Clos-Saint-Urbain Grand Cru 2018 (bio)
Sebastian Bordthäuser: A modest entry with an elegant stature and a slender flow. The floral aromas also manifest themselves on the palate with great nobility, never loud, yet emphatically with a delicately pronounced profile. The gustatory windows open, the rose garden in front of the salon is reflected in the soft pink of the drink. With a creamy texture and a persistent finish, this Gewürztraminer combines fragrance, fruit, and aristocratic drinking pleasure with a slender body and great length. For now, next week, or the next decade. Always welcome.
Wine Information
In the Grand Cru Rangen vineyard, the cultivation of the Gewürztraminer grape is not a given! The influence of the altitude and the cold valley in late winter/early spring can delay bud break, and flowering can be problematic. For this reason, the two small Gewürztraminer vineyards are located directly above the Thur River below the Clos Saint-Urbain. The volcanic sedimentary soils of this vineyard are able to catapult this aromatic grape both onto the nose and the palate. (Olivier Humbrecht)
Colour
Brilliant, radiant golden yellow.
Nose
The 2018 Gewurztraminer Clos Saint Urbain Rangen de Thann enchants with finesse, freshness, and stimulating fragrances: roses, linden blossoms, lily of the valley, pear, quince, apricot, and mango. All the aromas are finely interwoven and animated by a floating lightness and elegance.
Palate
It shines on the tongue with freshness, finesse, and delicate aromas. Its compact, smoky, and firm minerality grips the palate and never lets go. Elegant sweetness meets juicy fruit and spice, resulting in a wonderful interplay. A truly great and impressive Gewürztraminer, unparalleled and a delight to pair with great gourmet cuisine. Those with impatience are advised to decant it a day or two in advance and enjoy it from large Burgundy glasses.

The 2018 Gewurztraminer Rangen de Thann Clos Saint Urbain combines the purity and unique spiciness, flintiness and ethereal character of the vineyard with the classic lychee and rose petal aromas on a deep, intense and concentrated bouquet. Lush and round on the palate, this is an intense, very long and sustainable Gewurz with fine tannins and a dense, complex and saline as well as grippy finish. The wine is tight but also charming in its generous fruit and lush elegance. There is richness combined with finesse and vitality, and it’s an outstanding representative of this great, unique and eternal grape variety. Although filled with 77.8 grams per liter of residual sugar, this tastes like a rather medium-sweet wine. Fabulous. Bottled in January 2020 with 13.2% alcohol and a natural cork. Tasted in January 2023.
