Description
Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Gewürztraminer Hengst Grand Cru 2021 (bio)
Christoph Raffelt: On the palate, the Grand Cru Hengst is incredibly dense, long, and deep, yet perfectly balanced between the generous fruit and spice on the one hand, and the freshness and minerality that the wine carries within itself on the other. Plenty of yellow stone fruit is present here, as are ginger, cardamom, curry, licorice, and bitter orange. The wine has a silky texture, an almost oily consistency, and a zesty finish. It is a wine for decades to come (Olivier Humbrecht).
Wine Information
The Hengst was classified as a Grand Cru in November 1982. It lies on a majestic, steep, southeast-facing slope in the village of Wintzenheim, very close to Colmar. The red limestone soil from the Oligocene consists of calcareous sandstone with calcareous pebbles and is rich in iron. The topsoil is actually quite thin, but the presence of clay (marl) gives this vineyard excellent drought resistance. Even today, Gewürztraminer is the most widely planted grape variety in Hengst. The combination of early ripening climate and high lime and iron content contributes to high phenolic ripeness, which is crucial for this grape variety. This also explains why this vineyard has become famous for its red wine!
Vintage Information
The healthy 2021 grapes produced a powerful, dry Gewürztraminer with great acidity.
Colour
Dense and bright golden yellow.
Nose
The 2021 Gewurztraminer is refreshing and invigorating on the nose. Aromas of sweet grapefruit, rose petals, and lily of the valley combine with juicy orange, ginger, and cardamom. Its cool and aristocratic aura entices the first sip.
Palate
As sinewy and noble as a noble racehorse, this wonderful Gewurztraminer is full of energy and nobility. Its salty and mineral structure, its fruit and dry character are extremely present, and the invigorating acidity and fine tannins make it the perfect food companion. I am an avowed fan of this grape variety, especially from my favorite region of Alsace, and top winemakers like Olivier Humbrecht perform true magic when it comes to bringing out the best in this grape variety. The finish is powerful and long, a true pleasure as a standalone wine and a congenial food companion. Its salty and extremely invigorating structure is compatible with many more years of aging; an explosion of impressions on the nose and palate is guaranteed. A true monument of wine, and at a spectacular price-value ratio. Be sure to decant it now and enjoy it in large Burgundy glasses. A few days of opening will allow it to further enhance its qualities.
