Description

Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Gewürztraminer Hengst Grand Cru 2020 (bio)

Christoph Raffelt: On the palate, the Grand Cru Hengst is incredibly dense, long, and deep, yet perfectly balanced between the generous fruit and spice on the one hand, and the freshness and minerality that the wine carries within itself on the other. Plenty of yellow stone fruit is present here, as are ginger, cardamom, curry, licorice, and bitter orange. The wine has a silky texture, an almost oily consistency, and a zesty finish. It is a wine for decades to come.

Wine Information

Olivier Humbrecht: The Hengst was classified as a Grand Cru in November 1982. It lies on a majestic, steep, southeast-facing slope in the village of Wintzenheim, very close to Colmar. The red limestone soil from the Oligocene consists of calcareous sandstone with calcareous pebbles and is rich in iron. The topsoil is actually quite thin, but the presence of clay (marl) gives this vineyard very good drought resistance. Even today, Gewürztraminer is the most widely planted grape variety in Hengst. The combination of early ripening climate and high lime and iron content contributes to high phenolic ripeness, which is crucial for this grape variety. This also explains why this vineyard has become famous for its red wine!

Vineyard Information

This Gewürztraminer comes from two very old vineyards in the center of the GC. In 2020, the grapes were very ripe and healthy. The ripeness demonstrates the rich potential of this warm and sunny vintage. Hengst fermented quickly and vigorously, like a stallion, and this powerful style suits this vineyard very well.

Colour

Dense and bright golden yellow.

Nose

The 2020 Gewurztraminer Hengst presents itself powerfully and captivatingly on the nose. Compact minerality, immense expression, rose oil, bergamot, cedarwood, light tobacco, cinnamon, wood smoke, and salty nougat characterize the opening, with aromas of orange zest, fig, and date joining in—what a firework of aromas already on the nose.

Palate

Attack on the palate: As if a noble racehorse had been unleashed, this energetic Gewürztraminer charges forward. Its salty and mineral structure is incredibly present, its delicate sweetness is underscored by a fine tannin and an incredibly invigorating and lively acidity. Its powerful, complex, and beautiful nature means I fall in love with this grape variety again and again, which is incredibly versatile, especially when paired with food. Even if you’re tempted to empty the bottle immediately, you should exercise patience and store a few bottles in your cellar for a true feast for the senses in a few years. Decant now and enjoy it from large Burgundy glasses. A few days of opening will allow it to further enhance its qualities.
