Product description for Weingut am Klotz Weissburgunder “Im Scherben” 2022
Info
The year 2022 began with very little rainfall in the first quarter. This severe soil moisture deficit also carried over into the growing season. Everything seemed to start relatively normally. At the end of March, the buds were about to burst. Two freezing nights caused frost damage here in the southwest as well. Rising temperatures throughout the year and the drought promoted grape growth. The low amount of precipitation made plant protection much easier. However, due to the barrenness of the vineyards and their very exposed locations, the low water quantity was already close to critical levels. A few weeks before the start of the harvest, the long-awaited rain arrived. The energy was preserved in the grapes. The harvest began at the end of August, almost historically early. Im Scherben stands on Jurassic sedimentary rock and coral limestone in a very exposed location. The limestone here is very splintery, which is also the reason for its name. The wine matures for 15 months in large oak barrels and a further three months as an assemblage in steel tanks before bottling.
Colour
Brilliant lemon yellow with green and light reflections
Nose
The first nose immediately brings to mind toasted white bread with plenty of salted butter. It fluctuates between stony, cool elements and cold smoke. Always protected by its rich yellow fruit, however, it reveals wonderfully ripe apricots and mirabelle plums. Cream slices and fruit bases. Grilled pineapple and generous lemon zest provide freshness, distinctive tart aspects, and other roasted aromas. Grilled corn also comes to mind. Vegetable and ethereal nuances add noticeable accents that lend it great complexity. I would like to highlight artichoke and fennel, as well as sage and lemon balm.
Palate
All these impressions condense into a breathtaking first moment. Acidity and salt are in absolute harmony, allowing both to showcase their strengths. Its fruit is concise, yet above all crisp and characterized by its acidity. A fine melting sensation encases the fruit very well. Its nuances of vegetables and herbs become more intense later on. Also striking is its noticeable minerality, which duels with the melting sensation. A very successful example of this correlation.
