Description
Product description for Velich Tiglat 2020
Information about the wine
Tiglat is a single-varietal Chardonnay from the Seewinkel region on Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland. The vines were planted in 1959 under the assumption that they were Pinot Blanc. Heinz Velich and, at the time, his brother Robert Velich (Weingut Moric) used them to produce Austria’s first major, internationally successful Chardonnay in the 1990s. Since then, the wine, which was once powerful, has become increasingly finer and more elegant. The grapes are harvested by hand when fully ripe and, after the wine has been left to stand, slowly pressed as whole clusters, fermented spontaneously at a relatively warm temperature, and aged on the full lees in oak for two years.
Colour
Light golden yellow
Nose
Tiglat is one of Austria’s best Chardonnays every year and doesn’t shy away from international comparisons. This is especially true in 2020, as the wine appears even finer, brighter, and clearer than in the two previous years, which featured more yellow fruit and a more creamy texture. The 2020 Tiglat opens with plenty of white blossoms, a touch of smoke, and slightly reductive notes that are present but not dominant. Added to this are notes of lemon oil, salted lemons, and limequats, a touch of lime and iodine, as well as the finest pastries and a touch of wood.
Palate
On the palate, this is a lively and quite powerful wine that is simultaneously silky, creamy, deep, and enveloping, with fine wood, yellow, green, and orange fruit, and plenty of silky texture. In addition, the Tiglat appears salty and excitingly mineral, dense, and endowed with a wonderful, deep aromatic blend of fine spice and zesty zest, a fine extract sweetness, and pear and lemon cream. All of this seems to never end, seems intense and only slowly subsides.

Score: 94
The 2020 Tiglat is a pure, intense and mineral Chardonnay that was aged in 225- and 500-liter barrels for 18 months, which adds some charm and openness. On the palate, this is a pure and refined yet intense and full-bodied wine with remarkable finesse and elegance. The finish is warm but also pure, fresh, saline, energetic and very long. The power (13.5% stated alcohol) is palatable yet not numbing. This is a dense, elegant, refined and balanced Chardonnay with stimulating bitters on the tight and grippy finish. This is excellent and rather a wine from Apetlon than from Chablis. Diam cork. Tasted in July 2023.
