Description
Product description for Valfaccenda Roero Valmaggiore Riserva DOCG 2020 Azienda Agricola Valfaccenda was founded in 2010 by Luca Faccenda and his partner Carolina Roggera in Canale. On the steep, sandy hills of the Roero, Luca and Carolina cultivate exclusively the indigenous Nebbiolo and Arneis grape varieties – firmly aware that only natively rooted grape varieties can authentically reflect their origins in the bottle. The two hectares of land they own are located around the winery near Canale, while additional land is leased on the hills of Le Rocche, the symbol of the Roero region, as well as in Vezza, Madonnna di Loreto in Canale, and San Grato in Santo Stefano. The soils of the Roero are composed of sand, which in ancient times formed the seabed of the Gulf of Padania and is sometimes found mixed with clay sediments. In 2014, Luca Faccenda applied for organic certification to ensure his vines enjoy the best conditions for an authentic expression of Roero. Valmaggiore is a blend of three vineyards: Mompellini, Loreto, and San Grato, located in the municipalities of Canale and Santo Stefano. The young and old vines grow on sandy soils with varying degrees of clay, facing southwest, west, and east. The grapes are harvested at peak ripeness and fermented separately, depending on the vintage, vine, and site. After the mandatory aging in barrels, the wine is bottled on the waning autumn moon in the year following the harvest. After almost a year of aging in the bottle, the wine is released for sale.
Colour
Dark, transparent ruby red.
Nose
Profound and darkly fruity, the 2020 Roero Riserva Valmaggiore from Valfaccenda immediately makes clear its claim to the ring: Nebbiolo from the top shelf. The complex nose is in constant motion like a kaleidoscope, with dark cherry opening the scene, followed by sour cherries, a hint of sloe, moist subsoil, truffles, and then morning mist. The aromatic interplay of this wine is sparkling, three-dimensional, and offers the complete Nebbiolo package.
Palate
Polished and radiant, profound and fine, concentrated and light-footed, this Nebbiolo seemingly effortlessly resolves these apparent opposites on the palate. Its tannins are polished to the point that they retain their robust bite, yet still allow the fruit its due. This is a wine that isn’t meant to be stored for eternity, but rather one that provides pleasure now, without compromising or trivializing the seriousness of the variety. Great for beginners and equally enjoyable for advanced wine drinkers.
