Description
Product description for Thomas Morey Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Le Puits AOC 2023
The Chardonnay comes from the 1er Cru Le Puits vineyard in Saint-Aubin. Just 0.6 hectares there are classified as Premier Cru, while an area twice as large above the Premier Cru is Village. There is an underground spring that always supplies the vineyard with sufficient water. The vineyard was planted with a mass selection in 2000. Apart from Thomas Morey, only Dominique Derrain is likely to own a share of the (red) Le Puits. The vineyard faces southeast and lies above the village of Saint-Aubin on predominantly chalky, rather white soil with a fairly large amount of small pebbles. The first wine was produced in 2002. Thomas Morey recommends four years of bottle aging. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in a combination of neutral barrels and tanks. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally, and the wine remains on its lees without any bâtonnage. The proportion of new wood is around 20%. Sulfurization only takes place in the last six months in the barrel, and this is done several times with minimal doses, so that the wine never exceeds 35 mg/l overall.
Colour
Lemon yellow with a slight green tinge
Nose
Thomas Morey’s Saint-Aubin »Le Puits« 2023 shows the higher, cooler vineyard site. It is a crystalline, light Chardonnay with partly ripe green fruit. Notes of apple, greengages, lemon, a touch of reduction, but also a touch of cream, vanilla, and pineapple can be found here.
Palate
On the palate, the Saint-Aubin appears rounder than the nose suggests, but beautiful – and this is typical of this wine. The wine appears juicy and creamy with green-ripe fruit, a rather round acidity typical of 2023, but with a good kick and mineral tension. Length and presence are just as fitting as the slightly sweet, ripe stone fruit core and a piquant finish.
