Description
Product description for Tenuta di Carleone Il Randagio IGT 2022
Information
“Il Randagio” is “the stray dog” and he has an eye patch. Typical Sean O’Callaghan. It is the little brother of Il Guercio and is vinified in the same way: spontaneous fermentation in cement tanks with four months of maceration, including 40 to 50% whole bunches. This is followed by 12 months of aging in cement tanks. The difference to Il Guercio: The grapes were harvested earlier, and they are Merlot and Cabernet Franc instead of Sangiovese.
Colour
Bright garnet red
Nose
From the outset, Il Randagio 2022 is more Tuscan than a Merlot-Cabernet-Bordeaux epigone. It is more reminiscent of the Loire. But it does indeed offer a hint of the pansy scent typical of Radda. Added to this are notes of violet, black cherry with a subtle sweetness, red and dark berries and also a few plums. Finally, you find herbs, a touch of leather and some tobacco. Everything seems juicy, fresh and ambitious at the same time.
Palate
The palate is even more enjoyable. What a wonderful wine this is from this grape variety in the heart of Chianti! The wine appears youthful and fruity with a hint of carbonic maceration. There are more floral notes, red and black currants and sour cherries. The wine appears herbal, juicy and fresh with a slightly grippy tannin and a typically vibrant Galestro acidity. The finish is firm, fleshy and fresh, the pure fruit dances with the acidity, the wine has a pleasant, slightly hearty component but also a delicate one.

Score: 93
The Tenuta di Carleone 2022 Il Randagio is a blend of equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc (with some whole-cluster fermentation) and comes in a screw-cap bottle with a drawing of a one-eyed bulldog on the front label that surely must be a Sean O’Callaghan alter ego. He dabbles in long maceration times and alternative cement vessels. There is a lot of creative spirit in a wine like this that reveals fresh berry tones that pop brightly. The style is full of energy. This is a well-priced red that I happily recommend, especially if you are looking for a casual but spirited expression. Some 30,000 bottles were made.

The 2022 Il Randagio, a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, is fabulous. Bright acids and floral overtones grace this exquisite, nuanced red. There’s a good bit of whole clusters (40-50%), but stems aren’t especially evident. The 2022 spent four months on the skins in cement and open top tanks. More than anything else, it’s the freshness and purity here that stand out. What a gorgeous wine this is.
