The old vines for the Welschriesling Weinstock come from the Zieregg vineyard in a subplot called Steinbruch. The vines, which are on average 40 years old, are planted there on coral limestone with a layer of brown earth, facing south on a slope of 40-50% at 430-460 meters above sea level. Harvested by hand and fermented spontaneously, the wine matured for 24 months on the fine lees in small, used barrels until it was bottled unfined and unfiltered. The Welschriesling Weinstock has considerable aging potential.

Nose

The nose of the 2020 Welschriesling Weinstock Alte Reben from the Tement winery is remarkable and demonstrates the potential of the grape variety beyond the fresh fizz. Dense and concentrated, it’s currently a bit taciturn, and only after sufficient aeration does it speak in a quiet but calm voice of apple skins, stone fruit, cider fruit, and nutshells. Overlying these are tart herbal notes, hop shoots, and pea pods, all drawn with a sharp pencil, more of a sketch than a finished depiction of its still youthful, undeveloped potential.

Palate

On the first sip, it oscillates between juicy fruit and its super-sinewy, taut structure, which practically whips it across the palate, making it explode. Citrus, salt, and iodine set the tone, followed by white-fleshed fruit, white nectarine, white currants, and apple skins. Slightly tart with a gently stimulating astringency, the palate is full of vibration with pulsating acidity and a long, saline finish.
