Information about the Wine

The wines from the Zieregg vineyard are the ones that have made the Tement winery world-famous. Zieregg is the Tements’ home vineyard, situated at an altitude of 330 to 490 meters and characterized by various limestone varieties such as coral shell limestone, weathered limestone, and limestone marl, each with quite thin layers of clay. The microclimate of this vineyard, combined with the soils and the more than 40-year-old vines, produces wines with a strong and elegant aromatic expression and unique aging potential, to which the organic, very complex farming method contributes its share. The Sauvignon Blanc was given two days of maceration, fermented spontaneously to 1.1 grams of residual sugar and 6.4 grams of acidity, and aged on the fine lees for 24 months in large, neutral wooden barrels. It was then bottled unfiltered.

Nose

Even on the nose, the exceptional 2019 vintage of Zieregg reveals itself in its elegance and complexity, in its fine spiciness and its intense, yet never loud, fruit. This is a Sauvignon Blanc that appears cool and stony, with scents of herbs and foliage, limequats and lemongrass, lemon balm, mint and salt lemon, sage, and a hint of cassis and gooseberry. It all seems incredibly dense and complex, yet somehow also relaxed and at peace with itself.

Palate

On the palate, the Zieregg develops enormous tension, distant pressure, and a smoky minerality of flint and salt rock. In general, the salt, the minerality, the vibrancy that the wine possesses is already great, even though it is still very young and has potential for 30 years or more. On the palate, there are also salt lemons, some light pome and stone fruit, herbs, and grapefruit zest with tart and piquant notes. All this coolness and minerality revolves around a warm, inviting, and charming core, seeming like a galaxy of its own in the vast cosmos of the world’s many Sauvignon Blancs. The wine already shows greatness, but will continue to grow, and there certainly won’t be many wines from this grape variety that come close to it this vintage.
