Product description for Tement Ried Grassnitzberg Riff Sauvignon Blanc, Erste STK Lage 2020 (bio)The Grassnitzberg vineyard is a closed basin at 300-420 meters above sea level with sandy, loamy, weathered soils. Planted in the 1950s by founder Josef Tement, the Grassnitzberg is not only Tement’s oldest vineyard, but also, compared to the Blatsch, Zieregg, Ciringa, and Wielitschberg, the coolest, consistently producing acidic, taut wines that are highly enjoyable to drink. The grapes were selectively harvested by hand and then subjected to a maceration period. The Grassnitzberg Riff vineyard matured for 24 months in large oak barrels on the fine lees, and through this long aging process reflects the character of the barren soil, the house’s style, and the development potential of a wine from a first-class vineyard.

Nose

The 2020 Sauvignon Blanc from the Grassnitzberg Riff vineyard by the Tement winery is somewhat more open-minded on the nose than the wines from the Große STK. Beneath the slightly smoky top note, yellow fruit aromas reminiscent of apricots or juicy nectarines emerge. Citrus notes of lemon blossoms and pink grapefruit zest outline the citrus-yellow fruit character of the wine, while lemon balm, chervil, and cassis leaves outline its herbal, spicy characteristics.

Palate

On the palate, it oscillates between herbal green and juicy yellow fruit aromas, driven by a vibrant acidity. Invigorating with a cool character and fine extract, it is expansive and generous even in its youth without completely wasting its energy, as it certainly benefits from several years of bottle aging. In its youth, it hovers somewhere between defined structure and floating elegance. Delicately salty with a bitter phenolic flavour, it flows rapidly into a fruity, tart, cool finish.
